When the Pope Shut the Door
We’re delighted to be working with renowned playwright Biddy Jenkinson on a new play commissioned especially for Guthanna Binne Síoraí called When The Pope Shut the Door. We had a staged reading in Smock Alley in November 2017 and the play will be staged in Autumn 2018. The play focuses on Míde, a nun with a past who is involved with a group who wish to introduce the ordination of women priests.
Surrounded by elderly nuns with nothing to lose Míde become the focal point and catalyst for much needed institutional change; and when a bishop decides to ordain her on his death-bed, it sets in motion a chain of events that will change Míde forever… but will it alter the church she has served so faithfully and loves so much?
